Jacques Lassaigne, Champagne Blanc de Blancs Millesime, 2017

A vintage Blanc de Blancs from the grower who made a forgotten corner of Champagne worth seeking out again. Emmanuel Lassaigne restored the reputation of Montgueux, near Troyes, whose vineyards share the same limestone vein as Le Mesnil. It has been called the "Montrachet of Champagne." Because Montgueux lies south of the Côte des Blancs, its Chardonnay ripens more easily, but the wines keep an intense backbone of acidity, so you get generosity and cut in the same glass. The Millésime is the house's single-vintage cuvée. Lassaigne makes it every year from just two or three single vineyards on the family's 4.7 southeast-facing hectares, and holds it at least eight years in bottle before it leaves the cellar. That kind of patience usually comes with a prestige-cuvée label, and here it comes from a small grower who simply won't rush.

More about Jacques Lassaigne

Emmanuel Lassaigne, the current steward, restored credibility to Montgueux—Champagne's once-forgotten terroir at the region's edge. He ferments with native yeast only, disgorges by hand, and adds minimal sulfur. The fruit-forward, mineral-driven Champagnes he makes feel like the region's secret finally being told.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters or langoustines; sole meunière; seared scallops with brown butter; gougères; a ripe wedge of Chaource or aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Dry, all-Chardonnay Champagne. Expect citrus and orchard fruit up front, with a chalky, stony edge and some toasty, bready depth from the long time in bottle. Medium-bodied with fine bubbles, firm and bright acidity, and a long, clean, mineral finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
