A walled premier cru monopole from the year Domaine Jacques Prieur calls the "vintage of the century." Twenty years on, this is serious Volnay that has had time to grow into itself. The Clos des Santenots is an enclosed parcel of about three acres, and Prieur is its only owner. It sits mid-slope and faces due east in the heart of Santenots du Milieu, on brown, manganese-rich soil over hard, rounded limestone the locals call "pierres percées" (pierced stones). Here's a quirk worth knowing: Santenots actually lies inside the commune of Meursault, but when it's planted to Pinot Noir the wine is labelled Volnay, and only the Chardonnay goes out as Meursault-Santenots. The domaine describes its 2005 reds as pure, powerful and concentrated, and Nadine Gublin, the house oenologist since 1990, made the wine that year. A wine like this rewards patience at the table too: decant it, give it time in the glass and serve it with something that deserves it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck with cherries, coq au vin, beef bourguignon, a wild mushroom and thyme risotto, roast pheasant or guinea fowl, or a wedge of Comté after the meal.

Tasting Profile

Expect the firmer, more structured side of Volnay: red and black cherry, raspberry and violet, with earthy, savoury and spice notes that build as the wine opens in the glass. Typically medium-bodied with fine but noticeable tannins and fresh acidity, it finishes long and mineral, with a bit more muscle than the silky Volnay norm.
