Jean-Baptiste Hardy makes Muscadet with the kind of texture and freshness that brings great Chablis to mind. His background explains a lot: before he came home to the family estate in Mouzillon in 2018, he worked at other domaines, including stints at Domaine Roulot and Bodegas Chacra. Éclats is pure Melon de Bourgogne from several plots on gabbro, the coarsely weathered magmatic rock that locals call "chappe" and that gives Mouzillon, at the eastern edge of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, its character. The grapes are farmed organically along biodynamic lines. It goes out as humble Vin de France while his single-plot wines carry the Muscadet appellation, but don't let the label fool you. It's a great way into one of the Loire's most exciting young growers, and proof of how far Muscadet can go.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters with mignonette; moules marinières; seared scallops in beurre blanc; grilled sardines with lemon; Dungeness crab with drawn butter; chèvre with crusty bread.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Melon de Bourgogne profile from Muscadet country: lemon, green apple and pear with a saline, stony edge. Typically light to medium-bodied, with bright, mouthwatering acidity and a touch more texture than everyday Muscadet, finishing dry, crisp and briny. Think of a lean, saline Chablis.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
