From one of Beaujolais' most uncompromising natural producers, this single-cru Brouilly comes from old vines on the granite and clay soils that give the appellation its backbone. Jean-Claude Lapalu farms organically with biodynamic touches and adds almost nothing in the cellar beyond an occasional whisper of sulfur, letting the fruit speak with the gutsy precision that's made him a peer of Metras and Foillard. The Croix Rameaux bottling is one of his more structured, terroir-driven cuvees, built on concentration rather than easy charm. This is a mature, back-vintage bottle from a private collection, now drinking with the savory, secondary complexity that good Gamay develops with a decade in the cellar. Decant it and treat it like the serious wine it is.

More about Jean-Claude Lapalu

In 1995, at 33, Jean-Claude Lapalu decided to bottle his own wine instead of selling to the cooperative. Now, a darling of Paris natural-wine circles, he tends 12 hectares of organically farmed old vines (averaging 60-80 years) on granite soils. A disciple of Jules Chauvet, he rejects all chemical inputs and embraces the philosophy that great wine happens in the vineyard, not the cellar.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with herbs, coq au vin, charcuterie boards, mushroom risotto, or a seared duck breast.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied Gamay with mellowed red fruit, earthy and savory notes from bottle age, fine tannins, and bright acidity. Mature and integrated rather than primary and fruity.
