From a master of natural Beaujolais, the deeper, more concentrated of his two flagship cuvees. Jean-Claude Lapalu farms organically with some biodynamics and intervenes barely at all in the cellar, and his Brouilly comes from old vines on granite with a good amount of clay, which gives this Cuvee des Fous ("cuvee of the madmen") real concentration and grip compared to his lighter Villages. The 2016 has had time to develop, settling into a savory, mature window. Gutsy and structured yet artfully balanced between wild earth and fruit purity. Lovely now, and excellent with a slight chill.

"The 2016 Brouilly Cuvee des Fous has a complex bouquet with scents of raspberry coulis, wild strawberry, cold stone and undergrowth. This is very detailed, quite an intellectual bouquet for a Brouilly. The palate is very energetic. You can feel this ricocheting around the mouth with "zingy" dark berry fruit, mixed with cola and light orange peel notes. This is going to grow up to be a superb Brouilly, and as such, it comes highly recommended." —Neal Martin

More about Jean-Claude Lapalu

In 1995, at 33, Jean-Claude Lapalu decided to bottle his own wine instead of selling to the cooperative. Now, a darling of Paris natural-wine circles, he tends 12 hectares of organically farmed old vines (averaging 60-80 years) on granite soils. A disciple of Jules Chauvet, he rejects all chemical inputs and embraces the philosophy that great wine happens in the vineyard, not the cellar.
