Northern Rhone Syrah from Jean-Luc Jamet, who in 2013 split from his brother and built his own domaine on the legendary Jamet family vines around Cote-Rotie. This Collines Rhodaniennes is his entry Syrah, 100% Syrah grown on the granite and mica-schist hillsides just outside the Cote-Rotie appellation, made for earlier, vibrant drinking. Jamet picks on the fresher side and uses only wild yeasts, chasing floral lift and crunchy fruit over weight. The 2012 was made under the old shared label in the family's classic, transparent style. A delicious, honest introduction to one of the Rhone's best-kept secrets, at a fraction of Cote-Rotie pricing.

The Jamet name means Côte-Rôtie, and Jean-Luc splits from his brother's traditionalism by using less whole-bunch fermentation—about 30%—to emphasize floral elements and vitality. Eight hectares of mixed granite, schist, and sand soils high above Ampuis yield Côte-Rôties that feel fresh and alive.
