Jean-Luc Jamet's Cotes-du-Rhone, 100% Syrah off the granite hillsides flanking Cote-Rotie, from the 2012 vintage. This is the everyday Syrah from one of the Northern Rhone's best-kept secrets: fresh, floral and crunchy, picked on the earlier side and fermented with wild yeasts. Jamet draws even this modest appellation from the legendary family vines, and would soon break out to found his own domaine. A decade-plus on, the fruit has mellowed into a savory, mature register while the lift remains. Serious Northern Rhone character at a friendly price.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Brilliant ruby. Sexy dark berry and floral scents, along with hints of licorice and bitter chocolate. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering spice-accented blueberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suave floral pastille quality. The floral element builds on the persistent finish, which is framed by smooth tannins. Jean-Paul Jamet told me that this wine, which is a great introduction to the house style at a gentle price, gets essentially the same cellar treatment as the Cote-Rotie but is bottled earlier." —Josh Raynolds

More about Jean-Luc Jamet

The Jamet name means Côte-Rôtie, and Jean-Luc splits from his brother's traditionalism by using less whole-bunch fermentation—about 30%—to emphasize floral elements and vitality. Eight hectares of mixed granite, schist, and sand soils high above Ampuis yield Côte-Rôties that feel fresh and alive.
