Jerome Prevost makes some of the most coveted Champagne in the world, and he does it from a single grape most houses treat as a blending afterthought: Pinot Meunier. He inherited two hectares of old vines, the Les Beguines parcel, in the little-known village of Gueux on the Petite Montagne de Reims, and launched his own wine in 1998 with help and cellar space from his mentor Anselme Selosse. The method is hands-off and artisanal: native-yeast fermentation in 450 to 600-liter barrels, about ten months of aging in the same wood, then bottled for its second fermentation without fining, filtering or cold-stabilization, with minimal sulfur. The GC23 marks the base vintage. This is grower Champagne at its most singular: wine-driven, textured and utterly distinctive.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
