Joh. Jos. Prüm is the Mosel house whose sweet Rieslings are made for the long haul, and this 1983 Auslese from Graacher Himmelreich is a chance to see that idea pay off with more than four decades already behind it. Himmelreich translates as the "Kingdom of Heaven," and it's one of the steep sites that make up the estate's 14 hectares, all in some of the region's top vineyards. Auslese means the grapes were picked selectively for extra ripeness. That concentration is what gives a sweet Riesling the backbone to last. The family's winemaking roots go back four centuries, and the estate has been making Riesling since 1911. Today it's run by Dr. Katharina Prüm, who was a lawyer before she became a winemaker. We'd sum up the house style as filigree, elegant and age-worthy, which is exactly why an older bottle like this is worth seeking out. It's for the Riesling lover who wants to know what time does to a great Mosel Auslese, and who would rather someone else had done the waiting.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras terrine with toasted brioche, or a wedge of Roquefort or Stilton after dinner. Also lovely with a simple apple or pear tart, or a plate of aged Comté with dried apricots.

Tasting Profile

Expect the filigree Prüm style. With long bottle age, a Mosel Riesling Auslese typically trades its youthful peach and apricot for honey, dried apricot, candied citrus and the petrol-and-slate notes that mature Riesling is famous for. It's typically light-bodied and delicately sweet, with racy acidity keeping it lively and a long, clean finish rather than a heavy one.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
