A gold-capsule Auslese from Joh. Jos. Prüm's Graacher Himmelreich, the "Kingdom of Heaven" vineyard on the Mosel, is about as classic as sweet German Riesling gets. Auslese means the grapes were picked selectively for extra ripeness. The gold capsule marks a special selection within that tier. This 2006 has already spent close to two decades in bottle, so it's a back-vintage bottle for anyone who would rather not do all the waiting themselves. It's for the Riesling lover who wants to see what one of the great Mosel names does with sweetness: the pull between richness and tension that makes Auslese one of the real pleasures of the wine world. And no special occasion is needed. It's just as good at the end of a Tuesday dinner with a wedge of blue cheese.

"Pale golden yellow. Fine bouquet of blackcurrant, tropical fruits and sweet herbs. Pure, rich and complex on the palate, with subtle nut oil and brown spice notes keeping the creamy custard-like flavor bright and ethereal. Unctuous yet lively, with a long, complex finish." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

"The Prum 2006 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule introduces a note of caramel, here with heady over-ripe pear, gardenia, and a Chartreuse-like aura of herbal and floral distillates. Amazingly honeyed and rich yet light to the touch, this is possibly a somewhat more obvious wine than the auction lot of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, but also a more concentrated as well as more botrytized one. Expect it to be worth cellaring for four decades." —David Schildknecht

"A kaleidoscope of orchard fruit, with a squeeze of lime served on a wet slate platter. Delicate and fresh, yet concentrated, with a silky, see-through texture. Has great length, with a tangy aftertaste. Drink now through 2035."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Sweet enough for foie gras terrine with brioche, or a slab of Roquefort or Stilton after dinner. Also a fine match for Thai green curry or Sichuan mapo tofu, where the sugar cools the chili, and for a simple apple or pear tart.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Mosel Auslese profile: ripe peach, apricot and citrus with honey and a slaty mineral edge, plus the petrol and dried-fruit notes that mature Riesling typically picks up. Prüm's house style is delicate, low in alcohol and light on its feet rather than heavy, so the sweetness is balanced by bright, racy acidity and a long, lifted finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
