Freisa is the wild, rustic cousin of Nebbiolo, and almost nobody in California grows it. Scott Schultz of Jolie-Laide does, sourcing it from Tres Pinos Creek in San Benito, where 1994-planted vines sit in gravelly alluvial loam beside the creek that lends the wine its name. This is the kind of obscure Old World grape Schultz built his cult following on, vinified gently in his hands-off style: whole-cluster, foot-stomped, fermented in concrete, then a year in neutral barrel to round out the grippy tannins. The result is light-bodied but seriously structured, with the bright acidity and savory edge that make Freisa such a fun, off-the-beaten-path pour. Chill it down slightly and pour it for anyone who thinks they've tried everything.

More about Jolie-Laide

Jolie-Laide means "pretty-ugly," and there's something gloriously contrary about Scott and Jenny Schultz's tiny California winery. They hunt forgotten Old World grapes—Trousseau, Gamay, Melon de Bourgogne—and coax them into wines with serious acidity and purity. Low-intervention, high-reward.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pizza, mushroom risotto, charcuterie boards, roast pork, or aged hard cheeses. A slight chill makes it great with cured meats and antipasti.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of tart red berries, dried herbs, tea and tobacco. Light-bodied with high acidity and firm, grippy tannins. Savory and tart through a clean, lifted finish.
