This premier cru Chardonnay comes from a rocky limestone plateau about 100 meters upslope from Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. That's about as close as you can get to the most coveted dirt in white Burgundy without paying for the address. En Remilly is on the Puligny side of Saint-Aubin, where the village's most sought-after premiers crus are, and in places the surface is pure limestone that soaks up the sun. Joseph Colin says the wine captures the brightness of the huge sky and sunlight you take in standing on the crest of the Montrachet. He knows this ground well: his family's parcels are centered in and around Saint-Aubin, Puligny and Chassagne. Marc Colin was one of the original leaders in raising the quality and image of Saint-Aubin over the last 30 years. In 2017, following his older brother's lead, Joseph took a little over six hectares from the family property to start his own domaine. He farms sustainably and stays hands-off in the cellar, fermenting with native yeast and leaving the wines on their fine lees in barrel until bottling. If you want Chardonnay from the Montrachet neighbourhood without paying for a Puligny or Chassagne label, this is one of the smartest bottles in his range.

"From both En Remilly and Les Cortons. A fresh and softly exotic nose features aromas of as citrus confit, passion fruit and white peach. There is excellent vibrancy to the delicious medium weight flavors that flash evident minerality before concluding in a clean, dry, linear and chiseled finish where a touch of lemon zest slowly emerges. This is excellent and worth your interest."

"The 2024 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru has a straightforward bouquet that needs more complexity and terroir expression—after all, this is En Remilly! The palate is where the action is: fresh and saline, plenty of vigour with a twist of sour lemon on the finish. Nice persistence in the mouth; this is another from Colin that just needs bottle age for the aromatics to open." —Neal Martin

"40-year-old vines planted on limestone. Cask sample. Green/gold in the glass. Richness and ripeness with plenty of chew on the palate. Full-bodied, fleshy style of St-Aubin."

More about Joseph Colin

Joseph Colin split from the family estate in 2017 and launched his own domaine with 6.5 hectares in Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet. His whole-bunch pressing, native yeasts, and minimalist approach yield 21 different cuvées—a young hand redefining what Côte de Beaune can be.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared scallops in brown butter, roast chicken with lemon and thyme, sole meunière, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bright, mineral style Saint-Aubin's top premiers crus are known for: lemon, white peach and white flowers over a stony, chalky edge, with a light touch of toast from barrel ageing. Time on the lees typically adds a creamy texture, but the acidity stays taut through a long, saline finish. Think a tighter, stonier Puligny-Montrachet.
