Joseph Drouhin spent years as one of Burgundy's top negociants and now sees itself as a top domaine, and Clos des Mouches is the flagship that backs that up. This walled Beaune 1er Cru has been a Drouhin standard-bearer for generations. The 2011 red has settled into a lovely, approachable phase, more open and giving than the older vintages while still holding plenty in reserve. Expect bright-but-mellowing red fruit edging toward earthy, savory complexity. It's drinking beautifully now with no need to wait. A reliably elegant, classic red Burgundy. Decant and enjoy.

Antonio Galloni

"Bright medium-deep red. Musky aromas of dark berries, licorice and minerals. Juicy, suave and fine-grained, with dark fruit flavors complicated by enticing subtle minerality and a whiff of game bird. Dry, classic wine with good density and and depth. Finishing flavors of dark berries, flowers and minerals give lovely lift to the primary back end. Really refreshing stony energy here." —Stephen Tanzer

"Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. I am unsure about this bottle of Drouhin’s Beaune Clos des Mouche '11, which tasted better in the past. It exhibits some brett on the nose that slightly muffles the red berry fruit, rendering it a little rustic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with solid, ripe tannins. There is plenty of chewy red fruit here, although it feels quite stern on the structured finish that tapers off a little rapidly. I suspect another bottle would perform with more aplomb." —Neal Martin

"Bright crimson. Broad pretty fruit, very alluring and easy to love. Masses of fruit – such a spread! Already lovely. Very fine tannins on the end. Just a little kick of dryness on the finish but lovely mouth-filling stuff."

"Deep and almost brooding on the nose, this is a youthful expression of the 2011 vintage. With ample notes of black cherry, damson plum, tar, spice and toast, its nose is reminiscent of a Gevrey-Chambertin while its dense palate and grippy but polished tannins reflect a Pommard style. While drinking well now, it could still benefit from future cellaring."

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
