When a screenwriter who created Karate Kid and Taken takes wine seriously, you get Kamen. Robert Kamen bought this rugged Mayacamas Mountains property above Sonoma after selling his first script in 1980 and planted vines the following year; the estate now sits in the Moon Mountain District, at 1100 to 1450 feet, farmed organically. The 2022 is estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, classic mountain Napa-Sonoma in profile: black-fruit dense, structured by the kind of fine, chewy tannins only altitude and rocky volcanic soils deliver. With air it opens into cedar, leather and dried herbs, the savory tertiary notes already beginning to peek through. A serious, age-worthy mountain Cab.

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is the only red wine Kamen bottled in 2022 because of severe heat. Dark, pliant and super-expressive, the 2022 is quite attractive. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, espresso, menthol and licorice are nicely pushed forward. There's good mid-palate depth and solid balance here, but it's a bit assertive in style. This is a very good wine, given what was possible." —Antonio Galloni
