When a screenwriter who created Karate Kid and Taken takes wine seriously, you get Kamen. Robert Kamen bought this rugged Mayacamas Mountains property above Sonoma in 1980, after selling his first script; the estate now sits in the Moon Mountain District, at 1100 to 1450 feet, farmed organically. The 2022 is estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, classic mountain Napa-Sonoma in profile: black-fruit dense, structured by the kind of fine, chewy tannins only altitude and rocky volcanic soils deliver. "The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is the only red wine Kamen bottled in 2022 because of severe heat. Dark, pliant and super-expressive, the 2022 is quite attractive. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, espresso, menthol and licorice are nicely pushed forward. There's good mid-palate depth and solid balance here, but it's a bit assertive in style. This is a very good wine, given what was possible." —Antonio Galloni

More about Kamen

Kamen might have the best origin story in Sonoma. In 1980 Robert Mark Kamen, who went on to write The Karate Kid, sold his first screenplay and bought a rugged, volcanic stretch of the Mayacamas Mountains on the Sonoma side of Mount Veeder. Then he went looking for the man who had grown the marijuana he and his friends were smoking. That man was Phil Coturri, and Kamen hired him to farm the land.

Coturri became one of the leading figures in California organic and biodynamic viticulture, and Kamen has been his showcase ever since. Only a fraction of the large, wild property is planted, on steep slopes of fractured volcanic rock in what is now the Moon Mountain District. The vineyard was replanted in 1996 after a fire, it is certified organic, and cover crops share the rows with the vines for half the year.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship. It's joined by Syrah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc and Writer's Block, a red blend. Expect true mountain wines: dark-fruited, firmly built and worth cellaring.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and dense, with cassis, blackberry, cedar, leather, dried herbs and graphite. Firm, fine-grained mountain tannins, a deep core, a savory and remarkably long finish.
