Stefan Rumpf began producing and bottling his own wines from family vineyards in 1984, transforming Nahe tradition into modern quality expression. Now led by sons Georg and Philipp (who joined 2008 and 2015 respectively), the estate is known for tireless experimentation in fermentation, aging, and viticulture—including organic farming with integrated beehives and sheep for biodiversity. The 'Abtei 1937' Erstes Gewächs (First Growth dry Riesling) takes its name from the 1937 vines still producing in this historic parcel. This 2024 shows pristine fruit, mineral structure, and the complexity that old vines deliver: citrus, green apple, and subtle spice with bright acidity and tension. Ready now for food or cellar for 8-10 years.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
