A walled monopole at the foot of the Pousse d'Or estate. Clos d'Audignac is a roughly half-hectare parcel surrounded entirely by stone, with northeast exposure that gives it less direct sun than most of Volnay's 1er Crus — the wines often show a darker, more Pommard-leaning character than the village's reputation suggests. Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, under Patrick Landanger since 1997, treats this parcel with characteristic care: cold maceration, indigenous yeasts, gravity-fed bottling, unfined and unfiltered. The 2016 vintage was small and concentrated after spring frost, and nine years in the wine has shed its initial reserve. Dark plum, incense, black raspberry, plush earthy fruit — distinctive even within Volnay, and unmistakably its own place.

"(a northeast facing vineyard that rarely gets the same degree of sunlight as the other Volnay 1ers in the portfolio and thus it can often be more Pommard than Volnay in character). A pungent nose of reduction, wood toast and menthol overshadows the underlying fruit today. Otherwise there is a lovely texture to the more muscular if less refined middle weight flavors that also possess solid minerality and density while exhibiting the same touch of finishing dryness that, in the same fashion as the En Caillerets, my score assumes is related to the recent bottling."

"Bright ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry and smoky torrefaction. Sweeter and more pliant than the preceding samples, with the wine's purple fruit flavors joined on the suavely tannic back end by notes of licorice and herbs. This is almost soft in the context of this 2016 collection." —Stephen Tanzer

"The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos d'Audignac offers one of the most powerful bouquets among La Pousse d'Or's range of '16s, with showy black cherries, blueberry and light licorice scents, quite rich and extravagant. The palate is brisk and quite taut on the entry and seems to have other ideas. This is more introverted and linear, more black fruit than red with a slightly grainy finish. Moderate length here. Fine, but again, I would like to see more charm develop once in bottle." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Squab with figs, beef short ribs braised slowly, mushroom-and-marrow toast, duck rillettes, aged Beaufort, venison with juniper. The darker fruit profile loves savory, autumnal, slow-cooked plates.

Tasting Profile

Plush, dark-fruited Volnay with unusual weight for the village. Black plum, raspberry, incense, sweet earth, a smoky edge, hints of cocoa. Velvety tannin, fresh acidity, a long, layered, mineral finish.
