Sixty ouvrées is an old Burgundian measure for 2.39 hectares — and that whole walled parcel inside Volnay's celebrated Caillerets 1er Cru belongs to Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, monopole and historic showpiece of an estate that has changed hands over the centuries but kept this jewel intact. Patrick Landanger has run the place since 1997, succeeding the Potel era and continuing to coax Volnay's signature lift and silk from this south-east-facing limestone bench bordering Meursault. The 2017 vintage gave Pinot Noir of poised concentration in this part of the Côte de Beaune, classical in proportion, with the structure to keep evolving into the late 2020s and beyond.

"The 2017 Volnay Clos des 60 Ouvrées 1er Cru has a very nuanced and precise bouquet, understated at first, but revealing quite compelling mineral-rich black fruit with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, finely balanced, not quite as sophisticated as the Clos d’Audignac since this is more bullish and demonstrative on the grippy finish.
