Lagier Meredith were among the very first to plant Syrah in a Napa Valley defined by Cabernet, and this wine is the payoff. Carole Meredith, the UC Davis geneticist who used DNA to trace the parentage of Syrah, Cabernet and Chardonnay, planted these vines with husband Steve Lagier in 1994, high on Mount Veeder, on land they cleared themselves from rattlesnakes and olive trees. That mountain site gives a cool, structured, almost Northern Rhone-style Syrah, dark and floral, with the savory backbone that comes from rocky, high-elevation fruit rather than valley-floor ripeness. The 2015 has the depth and structure to age. This is a personal, hand-built wine from two people who knew exactly what they were doing.
