This is Monforte d'Alba Barolo from two of the most interesting newcomers in the Langhe, and an easy way into their work. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala met studying gastronomic sciences at Pollenzo. Lalú is just the first syllables of their names put together. They learned the trade working harvests at Trediberri, Reva and Conterno-Fantino, then did stints in Burgundy at Domaine Lafon and with Cécile Tremblay. They know this vineyard well: they farmed it in 2018 and 2019, when it belonged to Conterno-Fantino, then bought it in 2022, and it sits at the very top of the hill at about 540 metres on sandy, marine-influenced soil. This bottling is a village-level Barolo labelled with the commune's name rather than a single cru, so it shows you Monforte through their eyes. They farm naturally and regeneratively. Their Barolo ages in Austrian oak.

"The Lalù 2022 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba shows immediate intensity and brightness with pretty fruit tones of sweet berry, wild cherry and dried raspberry. It captures the power and focus typical of Monforte, with background notes of lavender, crushed granite and cinnamon stick adding aromatic lift. The wine holds everything in beautiful balance despite the challenges of the vintage, delivering an accessible yet tightly composed expression with dark licorice, fine-grained tannins and a polished, persistent finish. I like this wine a lot. Production totals 3,094 bottles and 100 magnums." —Monica Larner

"Hailing from the winery’s Bricco Giubellini vineyard situated 530m above sea level and bordering Ginestra but not an official MGA, the LaLù 2022 Barolo del Comune di Monforte is a smooth, beautiful red with fresh aromas recalling violet, ripe forest berry, cake spice and wild mint. Reflecting the nose, the elegantly structured, delicious palate features raspberry compote, ripe black cherry, licorice and a dollop of vanilla alongside well-integrated, polished tannins and fresh acidity. A mentholated note caps the finish. Drink through 2037." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle or with a meat ragù; beef braised in Barolo with polenta; roast veal with porcini; agnolotti del plin; aged Castelmagno or Toma.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Nebbiolo perfume: red cherry, violets and tar, with dried herbs and a hint of spice. Monforte Barolo is typically firm and structured, though high, sandy sites tend to give more lift and finer tannins. Aged in Austrian oak, it should be dry, with bright acidity and a long, savoury finish built to age.
