This Barolo comes from the top of the slope in Monforte d'Alba's Le Coste cru, where their vines reach about 400 meters. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala started the estate in 2019 (the name joins the first syllables of their first names). Before that they learned the trade working harvests at Trediberri, Reva and Conterno-Fantino, with stages in Burgundy at Domaine Lafon and with Cécile Tremblay. Their Le Coste parcel was mostly planted in 1999 on sandy Sant'Agata Fossil marl, and they farm it naturally and regeneratively with a focus on soil health. In the cellar the Barolo ferments with native yeast and ages in Austrian oak. 2019 was their first Barolo harvest from these vines, so this is a chance to follow one of the Langhe's most interesting young estates while its story is still being written.

Robert Parker

95 points

"The Lalù 2022 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is a wine of terrific brightness and energy, offering aromas of wild cherry, raspberry and lavender pastille. The wine is lean and silky in texture with a tight, polished disposition that speaks to elegance rather than power. Despite the challenges of the vintage, it captures impressive purity and precision, with tightly wound fruit that remains focused from start to finish. The finish is slender, silky and refined. Production totals 2,036 bottles and 70 magnums." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin with butter and white truffle, agnolotti del plin, roast leg of lamb with rosemary, aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Barolo character: red cherry, violet, tar and a hint of licorice, with the perfume and lift that higher, sandier Monforte d'Alba sites tend to give. Typically firmly structured, with Nebbiolo's grippy tannins and bright acidity framed by Austrian oak, finishing long, savoury and dry. Built to age.
