Lalú's Langhe Nebbiolo comes from Barolo-zone crus, and it's the easiest way to get to know two of the most interesting newcomers in the Langhe. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala met at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, and the name Lalú is just the first syllables of their first names put together. They learned the trade working harvests at Trediberri, Reva and Conterno-Fantino. The Oberto family at Trediberri even put them onto their first vineyard, a parcel in La Morra's Roncaglie cru that they bought in 2015. The person they credit most for what they know about vineyards and the cellar is Dominique Lafon. This wine is made in small quantities from a half-hectare parcel in Roncaglie plus fruit from Bussia Bovi in Monforte, all farmed organically with grass left to grow between the rows. The cellar regime changes with each year's conditions instead of following a fixed recipe. Since the same two friends also make a Barolo from Le Coste di Monforte, this is the bottle that lets you get in early on a young estate that's going places.

"The racy 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo from Lalu is all about extreme elegance and energy, featuring aromas and flavors of wild rose, fresh strawberry, star anise and blood orange before a salty finish. It’s a silky red, with lithe polished tannins and makes for upscale everyday enjoyment." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Lalu

A tiny project from Piedmont: five hectares of organically farmed Nebbiolo and Barbera in Monforte and La Morra. Lalu makes remarkably approachable, delicious wines—bright and clean, the opposite of blockbuster Barolo. Young producer, already impressive.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

Vineyard
Sourced from vineyards in La Morra and Monforte d'Alba from vines too young to use for Barolo.
Orientation
Varying expositions at 300-400 meters.
Soil
Varying but mostly Sant'Agata Fossil Marl - a limestone-clay typical of the area.
Viticulture
Practicing organic. Hand-harvested.
Vinification
1/2 is done whole berry and 1/2 is destemmed. Vinified in cement.
Aging
Aged in Austrian oak barrels for about eight months.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and sage or a light meat ragù, agnolotti del plin, mushroom risotto, roast chicken with rosemary potatoes, or vitello tonnato.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Langhe Nebbiolo profile: red cherry, raspberry, violet and a hint of tar and dried herbs, with the La Morra fruit typically adding perfume and the Monforte fruit a firmer frame. Medium-bodied, with bright acidity and fine but grippy tannins, it finishes dry and savoury. Think of it as a younger, more approachable Barolo.
