This Cabernet carries one of Napa Valley’s greatest historical stories: the vineyard is literally named after Harold Olmo, the legendary UC Davis grape researcher whose 1939 experimental clonal vineyard became the very parcels you’re tasting from. His FPS 02 clone became the foundation of Napa Cabernet—this wine is the living legacy of that discovery. Larkmead, founded in 1895 and family-owned by the Solari since 1948, farms these 115 acres organically with reverence for history. At ten years old, the 2016 Dr. Olmo shows the graceful aging potential of heritage terroir and visionary viticulture.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Olmo retains much of the youthful intensity and raw power it showed as a barrel sample. Savory herbs, gravel, game, wild cherry, leather, spice, menthol and dried flowers give the 2016 its distinctive aromatic signatures. Despite its mid-weight feel, the 2016 carries quite a bit of tannin and more than enough structure to age gracefully for many years to come." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Olmo (Black Label) is deep garnet-purple in color, offering exuberant notions of crushed black and red currants, warm plums and wild blueberries with an undercurrent of cigar box, violets, black tea and pencil lead plus a waft of menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers wonderfully expressive cassis and red berry preserves layers with loads of floral and savory accents, framed by firm grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and perfumed." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Wine Spectator

94 points

"This is distinctive, with a loamy lead-in that quickly yields to enticing alder, flint, savory, sage and tar notes ahead of a core of well-steeped currant and blackberry fruit. Keeps a smoldering edge through the finish, with earth and fruit notes working together."

Wine Enthusiast

95 points

"Tawny in taut leather with layers of coffee bean, dried herb, plum and cherry, this wine is structured and 100% varietal, from older vines. Lengthy in power and grip, it has dusty tannin weight and breadth alongside fistfuls of Asian spice and clove and lasting acidity."

More about Larkmead Vineyards

One of Napa's oldest family estates (1895), run by the Solari family since 1948. Their organic vineyard sits at 1,100 feet, and the wines—Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc—reflect that cool-climate discipline. Historic, unshowy, genuinely excellent.
