What is this wine?

Laurent Bénard is a grower-producer based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ in the Vallée de la Marne, farming organically and biodynamically on the family’s estate vineyards. La Clé des 7 Arpents comes from a single parcel named Les 7 Arpents, planted to Meunier on clay-limestone soils. The wine is made with natural fermentations, minimal dosage, and long lees aging, bottled as an Extra Brut to highlight purity and terroir expression. “R21” refers to the base vintage of 2021.

Why get this wine?

For fans of grower Champagne, Laurent Bénard offers extraordinary depth, precision, and authenticity at prices well below the region’s luxury houses. This cuvée is a rare, single-parcel expression of Meunier—a grape too often overlooked—that shows just how refined and complex it can be. Low dosage and biodynamic farming make it both terroir-driven and vibrant.

What does this wine taste like?

Bright orchard fruit (pear, apple, quince) layered with citrus zest, white flowers, and a chalky minerality. The palate is taut and precise, with fine bubbles, savory depth, and a long, saline finish.

When should you drink this wine?

Perfect as an aperitif or with seafood, oysters, or light poultry dishes. It is drinking beautifully now but will gain nuance with 3–5 years of cellaring. Serve well chilled.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
