Bramaterra is Le Pianelle's flagship red, and it makes the case that some of Piedmont's most exciting Nebbiolo comes from well outside the Langhe. The estate is in Alto Piemonte, in the hills of Brusnengo near Biella, at the top of the region. Its vines grow at 270 to 380 meters on south-southwest-facing slopes of acidic sand, some of it marine and some volcanic porphyry. Dieter Heuskel and Peter Dipoli started buying small parcels here in 2004, planted in 2007 and 2008, and brought in Cristiano Garella to make the wine. The first harvest came in 2010. The house blend is built on Nebbiolo, with the local Croatina adding color and tannic grip and Vespolina adding bright berry and herbal notes. Every bunch is picked by hand, and each variety and parcel is fermented separately in open wooden vats. The result is a serious, age-worthy Nebbiolo blend.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Alto Piemonte take on Nebbiolo: red cherry, violet and dried herbs with an iron-tinged mineral edge, plus a lift of bright berry from the Vespolina. Medium-bodied, with lively acidity and firm, grippy tannins backed by the Croatina, it finishes dry and savoury. Think a leaner, more mineral Barolo, built to age.
