Le Ragnaie’s standard 2021 Brunello di Montalcino offers an introduction to Riccardo Campinoti’s estate philosophy without requiring decades of patience. The 2021 vintage presented challenges—spring frosts reduced yields significantly—but resulted in balanced, elegant fruit from the parcels that survived. This is Brunello in its youth: approachable, expressive, honest. It invites you into Le Ragnaie’s world of traditional concrete fermentation, extended maceration, and Slavonian oak aging, but at a stage when Brunello’s primary red fruit and floral character shine brightest. Think of it as the gateway to understanding what makes this Montalcino producer one of Italy’s most respected.

Antonio Galloni

"More savory than sweet, the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass with nuances of wild strawberry, rose petals, mint and white smoke. It is lifted and graceful in feel, with round textures and pretty red berry fruits elevated by tantalizing acidity. A subtle mineral crunch mingles with delicate tannins as the 2021 echoes with a wild berry resonance. This understated yet beautiful Brunello benefited from the inclusion of juice from both the Fornace and Petroso vineyards." —Eric Guido

Robert Parker

94 points

"The Le Ragnaie 2021 Brunello di Montalcino delivers terrific character with an especially lively quality that gives the wine lift, tension and clear verticality. Fermented in cement and aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks, it reflects the estate’s artisanal philosophy, favoring personality and expression over excessive polish. Grilled herb and mint linger on the finish, while the palate remains well balanced, fresh and energetic over a medium- to full-bodied texture. This is a Brunello that may take risks stylistically (and not every vintage is perfect), but it rewards with authenticity and character. This is a release of 35,000 bottles." —Monica Larner

More about Le Ragnaie

Riccardo Campinoti farms the highest-altitude vines in Brunello—up to 655 meters—where regulations say you can't go. His Troncone Sangiovese, an IGT for refusing to play by the rules, has cranberry brightness and stony minerality that prove his point perfectly.

Pair with tagliatelle al ragù, roasted duck breast, or medium-aged cheeses—the wine’s youthful energy and bright acidity complement lighter braises.

Tasting Profile

Gregory Gouges is a very fortunate young man. He has free rein at one of the most historic domains in all of the Cote D'Or. There is a brand new state of the art gravity driven cuverie that his predecessors built after years of careful planning. The family vineyards encompass some of the greatest terroirs in Nuits Saint Georges including the 3.5 hectare Monopole "Clos des Porrets Saint Georges". The parcels are large and the vines are mature and in fantastic health.

The style at Gouges has been updated. For years, heavy extraction resulted in tannic wines that took many years to come around. If you ever come across old bottles, they are fantastic. Under Gregory Gouges, the tannins are managed more carefully and the wines are now made in a style with greater emphasis on finesse and fruit purity, allowing the greatness of Gouges' terroir to really shine.
