A benchmark Saint-Julien Second Growth in a celebrated vintage, in the festive format of a magnum. Leoville Barton is one of Bordeaux's most consistently brilliant and honestly priced classed growths, a piece of the historic Leoville estate that once dominated the Medoc. The 2009 was a rich, ripe, broadly acclaimed year on the Left Bank, and Leoville Barton's traditional Cabernet-driven blend has the structure to carry that opulence for decades. The magnum format ages more slowly and gracefully than a standard bottle, making this a back-vintage bottle from a private collection that's still relatively youthful and built for the long haul. Decant generously and pour it for a crowd - it's a celebration wine in every sense.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2009 Léoville-Barton is one of the few Saint-Julien '09s to suggest just a smidgen of brettanomyces on the nose, although frankly it does not detract from its allure, with lovely meat juice and brown spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, juicy and slightly chewier than its peers, well judged acidity with ample density and rondeur towards the finish. It might benefit from another year in bottle but otherwise, this is just a wonderful, life-affirming and disarmingly charming Léoville-Barton. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2009 Leoville Barton gives up expressive cherry cordial, warm cassis and blackberry tart scents with nuances of menthol, cigar box and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied and elegantly played with loads of freshness and soft tannins, it has a long, perfumed finish." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Something reminiscent of a schoolmaster about this wine – ink and pencil lead? Fresh and minerally and sleek with a hint of mint and very strong Cabernet Sauvignon personality. A fine wine by any measure."

Decanter

"This stands out above its sibling estate by some distance in this vintage - in fact I would say that the closing of the gap between Léoville and Langoa has been the biggest marker of the past decade for them. This is a gorgeous 2009 - rich, measured and slow-burning, full of rippling tannins and good acidity and freshness. The gorgeous, subtle smoke notes aligns with St-Julien freshness and elegance, with a punch of power. Great stuff."

"Licorice, berry, grape and currant on the nose turns to crushed fruit. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins, pretty fruit, currant and mineral. A balanced and pretty wine. Not quite the intensity and blockbuster style of the 2005, but excellent."

Wine Enthusiast

98 points

"A major success of the vintage. The wine exhibits extreme richness of the fruit, with all its sweet blackberry flavors. It also has underlying firm structure, density and solid tannins. Bring in the acidity at the end, and this is both impressive and ready for long-term aging." —Roger Voss
