Here's a chance to see what a Lafon Mâcon does with more than a decade behind it: a 2011 from Milly-Lamartine, the domaine's home village. Dominique Lafon founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999. The vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically. This cuvée comes from several parcels totalling 4.5 hectares on a steep east-facing slope that rises to 350 metres. The soil there is shallow clay packed with small limestone stones over hard bedrock. The vines went in between 1982 and 1987. Hardly anyone holds on to village Mâcon this long, so an older bottle like this is a rare treat for anyone curious about how far the region can go.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Mâconnais Chardonnay profile: ripe orchard fruit, lemon and white flowers, with a chalky, stony edge from the limestone soils. Raised in large neutral wood rather than new oak, it typically shows a rounded, medium body with fresh acidity and a dry, clean finish. Think of it as a sunnier, more generous cousin of Chablis.
