You don't often see an older single-vineyard Mâcon from Dominique Lafon, and this 2009 comes from Milly-Lamartine's prized site, the Clos du Four. It's a steep, east-facing amphitheatre directly behind the winery, mid-slope at 250 metres. The soil is deep, with more clay than most parcels in the commune, and it's packed with small limestone rocks broken off the bedrock below. The clos covers 1.4 hectares, with vines planted between 1982 and 1985. Dominique Lafon founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999. That puts 2009 early in the domaine's story. It's a chance to see what this clay-and-limestone site does with more than a decade in bottle, and it's worth a look for anyone who thinks Mâcon is only for drinking young.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels, veal blanquette, aged Comté, or pan-seared halibut with brown butter and mushrooms.

Tasting Profile

Expect the fuller side of Mâcon: yellow apple, pear and citrus over a chalky, stony edge, with the clay giving more weight mid-palate than most village bottlings. Large neutral casks typically add texture rather than oak flavour, and the acidity stays bright. With bottle age, Chardonnay like this tends toward honeyed, nutty notes and a long, savoury finish.
