Most Mâcon gets drunk young, so a 2007 from Dominique Lafon's Mâconnais domaine is a real curiosity. It's a chance to see what Chardonnay from this part of Burgundy does when it's made like serious white Burgundy and then given time in bottle. Lafon founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999 and converted the vineyards to biodynamics within a few years. Caroline Gon, his longtime apprentice, has run the cellar since 2006, so this vintage is hers. Les Maranches is a lieu-dit (a named vineyard site) in Uchizy, in the northern Mâconnais. Two parcels there face south at about 200 metres, on shallow clay full of white limestone rocks from the bedrock below. Half the vines were planted in 1977 and half in 1999. The richer soil and better exposure mean the site ripens earlier than the domaine's southern vineyards in Milly. The house treats these once-overlooked parcels as if they were premier crus and ages its wines only in large, neutral oak. That kind of ambition makes an aged bottle worth opening.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry, medium-bodied Mâcon in the serious white Burgundy mould: ripe yellow apple, pear and lemon over a chalky, stony edge. Large neutral oak and malolactic typically bring a rounder, creamy texture without obvious wood, while fresh acidity keeps the finish clean and mineral. Think a riper, rounder Chablis; with bottle age, this style tends toward honeyed, nutty notes.
