Pico is a volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic, where vines grow in black basalt corrals built by hand to shield them from the ocean wind, a landscape so striking it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This Verdelho comes from the island cooperative, Ilha do Pico, the oldest and largest grower on the island, working grapes that have nothing in common with mainland Portugal. It is a salty, mineral white shaped by sea spray and lava rock, the kind of wine that tastes like the place it came from. If you have never had an Azorean wine, start here.
