A deeply concentrated, slightly tannic wine from a steep, meager-soiled, forest-topped vineyard on the edge of Savigny. It’s the only wine in the lineup that requires a few more years in the cellar (or a nice cut of red meat): give it at least five, and I imagine it will continue to develop nicely for 15 years or more. It offers exceptional value at this quality level. Already delicious, even as one waits for the tannins to resolve, it shows powerful earth, mushroom, and savory herbs, with a dash of spice and plenty of limestone, backed by ripe dark cherry and taut acidity.

"The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Haut-Jarrons 1er Cru comes from a north/north-east facing parcel on deeper, sandier soils that creates more tannins. It has my pick of the bouquets this vintage: quite ebullient red cherries and wild strawberry fruit with hints of wild rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, caressing entry, lovely texture and well-judged acidity, fanning out nicely toward the finish. Very elegant in style, this comes recommended." —Neal Martin
