2002 is the Burgundy vintage that never made much noise and quietly turned out to be one of the most reliable of its decade. A cool May gave way to a warm, dry summer, and then a north wind in September dried the crop, preserved acidity and concentrated the fruit, producing reds that are pure and medium-bodied with fine ripe tannins rather than muscle. This bottling comes from Clos des Couchereaux, a Beaune 1er Cru site on a south-facing slope of well-drained clay and limestone, under the label of Louis Jadot, one of the most established houses on the Cote d'Or and a serious vineyard owner in its own right. More than two decades on, a wine like this has left its primary fruit behind and moved into the savory, secondary register that makes older Burgundy worth the patience in the first place. It is drinking now, not waiting for permission. Open it slowly, use your biggest glasses, and don't schedule anything for afterward.
