Nebbiolo grown on pure sand in a natural amphitheater, a completely different beast from Sandrone's Barolos. Valmaggiore sits across the Tanaro in the Roero, in Vezza d'Alba, on slopes so steep and soft-soiled they have to be worked largely by hand; the grapes here were so prized in the 19th century they set the price for the whole area. Those sandy soils give a Nebbiolo that's perfumed, silky and approachable, with finer-grained tannins than its Barolo cousins. The 2009 is now a mature bottle from a private collection, drinking at a lovely savory stage. An elegant, lower-key Sandrone for the table.
