Fifty-eight-year-old Barolo from the family estate of an Italian president. Luigi Einaudi — second president of the Italian Republic (1948-1955) and a serious lifelong winemaker — founded the Dogliani estate in 1897. By 1967, six years after Luigi's death in 1961, the cellar was in the hands of his son Roberto, who continued the traditional approach his father had set. This is pre-modern, pre-temperature-control Barolo, made in an era when patience and old botti were the only tools. At fifty-eight years on, a well-stored bottle is a fragile museum piece — drink it for the connection to mid-century Piedmont, not for fruit. Handle reverently: upright a full day before opening, pour gently, expect a faded, ethereal wine in its final act.

More about Luigi Einaudi

Founded by Italy's future president in 1897, Luigi Einaudi makes Barolo from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard at Terlo—a southeast-facing, calcareous-marl site with reserved nose, full-bodied attack, and silky tannins that evolve for decades. This is Piedmont's aristocracy.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The simplest possible plate: brodo with capelletti, a quiet risotto, or roasted capon. Let the wine be the event. Aged Castelmagno or a sliver of Toma to close.

Tasting Profile

Ethereal and faded: dried rose petal, sandalwood, autumn leaves, dusty earth, and a ghost of cherry. Tannins long gone; acidity holds the bones; the finish is whispered. A wine of memory and texture.
