Thirty-seven-year-old Barolo from the historic Einaudi estate, in fully resolved old age. Luigi Einaudi — second president of the Italian Republic and the founder, in 1897, of this Dogliani estate — set the traditional template that the family has kept across four generations. In 1988, Luigi's son Roberto was still at the helm; daughter Paola joined toward the end of that decade to begin modernizing the estate. The 1988 vintage was a good classical year in Piedmont, and at thirty-seven years on, this Barolo is squarely in its mature drinking window — dried-rose perfume, sweet earth, tar, faded cherry, and the savory depth that only properly aged Nebbiolo delivers. A library bottle in beautiful resolved form.

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 1988 Barolo is an intensely concentrated wine that possesses a sweet, cedary, earthy, cigar box aroma, and great concentration. The superb inner core of fruit suggests low yields and/or old vines. The finish is explosively long, moderately tannic, and intense. It is soft enough to be drunk now, but promises to be even better with 5-7 years of aging; it should keep for 12-15 years. Absolutely gorgeous!" —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Luigi Einaudi

Founded by Italy's future president in 1897, Luigi Einaudi makes Barolo from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard at Terlo—a southeast-facing, calcareous-marl site with reserved nose, full-bodied attack, and silky tannins that evolve for decades. This is Piedmont's aristocracy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and sage, agnolotti del plin, or a roasted bone-in veal chop. Aged Bra or Castelmagno makes a fine close.

Tasting Profile

Resolved and savory: dried rose, tar, sweet earth, faded cherry, leather, and a whisper of truffle. Tannins fully integrated; acidity still bright; the finish long and contemplative. Classical mature Barolo.
