More backward and medicinal than the 2005 or 2006 bottlings-and more classic Barolo in its dense flavors of camphor, menthol, brown spices and dried flowers. "Costa Grimaldi tastes fruity and tart and offers mature notes of raspberry and strawberry over subtle shadings of spice, licorice and root beer. It's definitely a riper expression of Barolo and therefore not as layered or complex as other wines from this vintage. That said, it's a fine wine with super-firm tannins and bright cherry flavors. "

Founded by Italy's future president in 1897, Luigi Einaudi makes Barolo from the Costa Grimaldi vineyard at Terlo—a southeast-facing, calcareous-marl site with reserved nose, full-bodied attack, and silky tannins that evolve for decades. This is Piedmont's aristocracy.
