Montestefano is the cru people reach for when they want to argue that Barbaresco hits every bit as hard as Barolo. It is the broad-shouldered, structured end of the appellation, and it does not do delicate. Luigi Giordano is a historic Barbaresco estate that the wine world has only recently started talking about: seven hectares, family-run, and bottling under its own label for as long as the famous names have been, if not longer. Giordano's seven hectares run across several Barbaresco crus - Montestefano, Asili, Ovello, Ronchi, Cars and Cavanna. Rephrase to 'among his crus are two of Barbaresco's finest, Asili and Montestefano' - the side-by-side comparison still works, but he is not limited to two sites. This is the muscular one. Nebbiolo from the warm, generous 2015 vintage gives you fruit up front and structure right behind it, so decant it now or hand it a few more years to settle into itself.
