Two vineyards, both more than a hundred years old, on opposite banks of the Douro, and Luis Seabra has stripped away every variable except the mica schist they grow in. That's the whole idea behind his Cru series, which he started in 2013 when he went out on his own after ten years under Dirk Niepoort: organize the wines around place, not grape. The two sites sit near Pinhão in the Cima Corgo. Seabra and his team farm them themselves, and they're among the last vineyards in the region to be picked. He works with old vines because he thinks they ride out the Douro's harsh weather better. In the cellar he keeps out of the way, fermenting only with wild yeast. This is a Douro red for people who care more about where a wine comes from than how polished it is.

"The top-of-the-range red 2023 Xisto Cru Tinto comes from two old vineyards and does not carry the Douro appellation this year. It fermented separately in open top-oak vats with indigenous yeasts and 100% full clusters and matured in used 228-liter barrels for 22 months, including malolactic. It's still a textbook, old-vine red from the Douro field blend, with notes of wet slate, berries and herbs and a spicy twist; it just has less volume, a finer-boned palate and a more elegant mouthfeel. The wine has contained ripeness and low alcohol, 12.5% on the label, with a pH of 3.61 and 6.4 grams of acidity. It's open, clean and expressive and has very fine tannins, coming through as balanced and harmonious but not lacking power. 6,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2025." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Luis Seabra

After a decade at Niepoort making wines to someone else's taste, Luis Seabra launched his own Douro winery to shatter preconceptions. His Xisto Ilimitado is a field blend from schist soils—rabigato, códega, gouveio, and more—fermented native, aged in old oak, with pear-blossom perfume and a saline finish.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary; roast pork shoulder with wild mushrooms; porcini risotto; a board of presunto and chouriço; smoked brisket.

Tasting Profile

Expect a fresher, more restrained take on Douro red than the region's dense, ripe norm: dark cherry, black plum and wild herbs, with the floral lift Touriga Franca typically brings and a stony, savoury edge from the schist. Typically medium- to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity, finishing dry, savoury and mineral.
