Marcel Lapierre's Morgon is, for many of us, where natural Beaujolais began, one of Kermit Lynch's "Gang of Four" and a benchmark for living, honest Gamay. Mathieu and Camille Lapierre carry on the work: organic farming, hand harvest, natural fermentation, little or no added sulphur. This is the classic flagship Morgon from 2014, a fresh, well-balanced vintage, and at a decade old it has matured into a savory, supple drink while keeping its lift. Drink now over the next couple of years.

Antonio Galloni

"Vivid ruby. A complex bouquet evokes fresh red and dark berries, peppery spices and violet, with a smoky mineral nuance emerging as the wine opens up. Juicy, focused and energetic, offering intense black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that deepen on the back half. Delivers a suave blend of power and finesse and finishes very long and sappy, with fine-grained tannins shaping the wine's clinging fruit. I find this, the sulfured bottling, less wild than its un-sulfured twin right now." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2014 Morgon has great transparency on the nose with red cherries, cranberry leaf and cold stone aromas - clearly less fruit-driven than the 2015 but nicely delineated. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, citrus fruit and nicely poised with orange zest and tart red cherries springing up all over the place on the finish. Almost too good to cellar, though don't stop yourself if so inclined." —Neal Martin

More about Marcel Lapierre

Marcel Lapierre is the father of natural wine, and his domaine remains the blueprint. Organic vineyards, wild yeasts, no sulfur, biodynamic methods since 1981—these weren't fashionable choices then. Now his son and daughter carry on the legacy with 18 hectares of exemplary Beaujolais.
