Charmes-Chambertin is often called the most elegant of Gevrey's grand crus, and this 2016 from Marchand-Tawse shows why. The house was founded by Quebec-born winemaker Pascal Marchand, a pioneer of organic and biodynamic Burgundy, in partnership with Moray Tawse, and their micro-negociant wines are made with a purist's attention to detail. The 2016 vintage was tiny after spring frost slashed yields, but the grapes that survived ripened beautifully, giving wines of concentration and depth. This mature grand cru is built on pure red fruit and fine, chalky structure, with the perfume Charmes does so well. It has the stuffing to keep developing, but it's already generous and lovely. Grand cru pedigree with the polish of a few years in bottle.

Antonio Galloni

"Dark red-ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of purple fruits, menthol and flowers. Tactile and rich but also fine-grained and elegant, conveying serious intensity and a light touch to its dark berry, licorice and violet flavors. A juicy, penetrating wine with noteworthy refinement for Mazoyères. Tight on the back end but already displays captivating rising length. Superb Gevrey intensity here--and perhaps a bit riper than the domaine Mazoyères bottled under the Maume by Domaine Tawse label, which comes off as cooler in the early going." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has lovely black fruit on the nose, touches of sous bois and morels coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, sappy and juicy in the mouth with plenty of red cherry and orange pith notes toward the grippy finish. One of the best from Marchand-Tawse in 2016." —Neal Martin

More about Marchand-Tawse

Pascal Marchand, a pioneering organic/biodynamic Burgundian, partnered with Canada's Moray Tawse in 2011 to form this négociant-domaine. They hand-pick fruit from biodynamic vineyards and now farm parcels in 20+ appellations. The 2012 purchase of Domaine Maume in Gevrey-Chambertin strengthened their foundation. Biodynamic Burgundy, seriously pursued.
