Marie-Noelle LeDru, Champagne Grand Cru Cuvee du Goulte, 2013

The 2013 harvest in Champagne came in later than any since 1991: a cold, damp flowering cut the crop, and the grapes then hung through a long, slow autumn, which is why this is the tautest and most chalk-driven of Marie-Noëlle Ledru's back vintages. Her Goulté is 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs from the best mid-slope parcels of the two hectares she farmed by hand in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, without herbicides or pesticides — "goulté" being Champenois dialect for the first-run juice off the press, the finest fraction of the pressing. Everything was fermented in steel and enamel with no oak, allowed to complete malolactic fermentation rather than being blocked with sulfur, left unfiltered and un-cold-stabilized, given about five years on the lees, then hand-riddled and hand-disgorged at very low dosage. She retired after the 2016 vintage, and Goulté in any year is now extremely difficult to find. From a private cellar; drinking wonderfully and the longest-lived of this run of vintages.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
