Hand-farmed Jura Chardonnay from one of the region's few women winemakers, and we'd put it among the best values the Jura has to offer. Marie-Pierre Chevassu-Fassenet took over in 2008 from her father, a cattle farmer who took on a couple of hectares of vines in the late 1980s. The domaine is Les Granges-Bernard, an old, secluded farm on the plateau behind Menétru-le-Vignoble, a few miles northeast of Château-Chalon, surrounded by pasture and old forest. She came home with real training: studies in Beaune and Dijon, harvests in New Zealand, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Champagne, and a stint running the cellar at one of the Jura's biggest négociants. Now she and one part-time helper hoe all 4.5 hectares by hand, farming organically without bothering with certification. The Chardonnay is her biggest cuvée, and like all her whites it's fermented and aged in old barrels. It comes from 30-year-old vines on grey marl under limestone scree. Her parents still live above the cellar and lend a hand, so this is family-scale Jura in the truest sense.

"The 2024 Chardonnay was pressed in full clusters, and the juice fermented in 600-liter oak demi-muids. 2024 was very low-yielding year after terrible frost. The wine has good definitions, with some Jura typicity, the ouillé (topped up) wines age in the same cellar as the Château Chalon, so the ambience is saturated with flor yeasts, and those find their way into most wines. In this wine, it didn't bother me; I found it pleasant; it added complexity without dominating, and the wine retains very good freshness and acidity. 2024 was also a cooler year with less ripeness than 2022 and 2023, and this wine is quite crystalline, reflecting the character of the vintage. It's a very good introduction to Jura Chardonnay at an unbeatable price. It was bottled in April 2025." —Luis Gutiérrez

Perfect Pairings

Aged Comté or gougères; chicken with morels and cream; trout with brown butter and almonds; mushroom risotto; a Jura-style fondue.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Jura Chardonnay: lemon, yellow apple and a touch of hazelnut, with a stony, savoury edge from the marl and limestone. Old barrels typically add texture without much obvious oak flavour, so the wine is medium-bodied, with bright acidity and a dry, mineral finish. Think of a more savoury, mountain cousin of white Burgundy.
