The top selection within Molitor's Spätlese tier from one of the Mosel's grandest crus, ten years on. Markus Molitor's capsule-color system extends beyond the standard white/green/gold sweetness markers — within each Prädikat level he uses Goldkapsel (gold capsule) and longer star-stamped designations to indicate his finest selections, drawn from the ripest and most concentrated parcels in any given vintage. Zeltinger Sonnenuhr ("Sundial of Zeltingen") is one of the great Middle Mosel sites, with steep blue-slate slopes that yield Rieslings of extraordinary tension and depth. The 2015 vintage was a benchmark across Germany, and this Goldkapsel Spätlese was built for the long arc — a decade in bottle has begun the integration but there's still decades of life ahead. The kind of bottle you open for a serious meal and never forget. A library wine in its early prime.

"The 2015 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese (Golden Capsule) displays the herbal bouquet of the Kabinett but is certainly more deep, concentrated and complex. The wine has great finesse on the palate, and its crystalline acidity and lingering salinity carry the perfectly ripe and lush fruit to a long, vibrating and mouth-watering finish. This Spätlese is highly finessed and complex and--along with the 2015 Scharzhofberger--probably the finest Spätlese I have tasted from the vintage." —Stephan Reinhardt

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A wine for serious table partners — pan-seared scallops with brown butter, roast pheasant with chestnuts, foie gras with stone fruit chutney, aged Roquefort with honeyed walnuts, or a contemplative pour solo.

Tasting Profile

Concentrated and laser-focused — ripe peach, apricot, honeycomb, candied citrus, white flowers, and pronounced blue-slate minerality. The acidity is electric, the sweetness perfectly poised, the finish endless and shimmering.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
