Markus Molitor, Riesling Urziger Wurzgarten Kabinett Gold Capsule, 2023

Gold capsule, and in Markus Molitor's code that means sweet: this is a classic fruity-sweet Mosel Kabinett, not an off-dry one. Molitor distinguishes his dry, off-dry and sweet Rieslings only by the colour of the capsule, white for dry, green for off-dry, gold for sweet, which is worth knowing because the word Kabinett describes how ripe the grapes were at harvest, not how sweet the wine is; he makes bone-dry Kabinett too. Urziger Wurzgarten, the spice garden of Urzig, is the Mosel's great oddity, a steep south-facing slope of red, iron-rich weathered slate and volcanic rock rather than the region's usual blue-grey, and it gives Riesling a rounder, spicier, fleshier shape than its neighbours. 2023 brought a wet late summer that forced brutal sorting on the Mosel, but growers who got clean fruit into the cellar made wines of unusual harmony, with acidity that flows rather than bites. Alcohol stays low and the sweetness is buoyant rather than heavy, which makes this as good before dinner as with it. Serve it properly cold.

"The 2023 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Golden Capsule) is still a little reductive at first, but it has precise and herbal fruit aromas and indicates depth, salt and finesse. Dense and lush on the palate, this is an intense and mouth-filling yet also textured and almost hedonistic Würzgarten Kabinett with filigreed acidity and flinty/slatey grip on the finish. This Kabinett is still very young and needs some more years in the bottle to refine and integrate its savory grip. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork." —Stephan Reinhardt

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green curry, Sichuan mapo tofu, Korean fried chicken, a pork terrine with mustard, or a wedge of blue cheese.

Tasting Profile

Peach, mandarin, honeysuckle and a distinct spicy, almost peppery note from the red slate. Sweet and light-bodied at low alcohol, with vibrant acidity holding the sugar in balance. The finish is juicy and mineral.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
