Markus Molitor, Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Spatlese Green Capsule, 2024

Green capsule: in Markus Molitor's code that is the middle setting, off-dry, between his white capsules (dry) and gold capsules (sweet). It is the single most useful thing to know about his labels, because Spatlese tells you only that the grapes were picked late and ripe, not how sweet the wine ends up. Wehlener Klosterberg is the estate's home vineyard, roughly twenty-four hectares of steep, south-facing stony Devonian slate with a high iron content and woodland at the top of the hill that helps the vines through dry spells; it gives elegant, racy, deeply mineral Riesling built to last. Molitor took over in 1984 at twenty and grew a few family hectares into around a hundred of the steepest Mosel and Saar slopes. 2024 was a hard year here, with April frost and a cool, wet summer cutting the crop by about a third, but the fruit came in healthy and the wines have lovely stable acidity and lift. Off-dry Riesling is the most useful bottle in the fridge, and this one will happily sit there for a few days once opened.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Spätlese (Green Capsule) is smoky and reductive on the nose, but the palate is a sprightly wonder, a citric leap of freshness and dynamism. This is superbly slender, straight as an arrow and tingling with zestiness." —Anne Krebiehl MW

Robert Parker

"The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Spätlese (Green Capsule) offers a clear, coolish, pretty rocky and savory bouquet of bright fruits and cold blue slate. On the palate, the wine is mouth-filling, elegant and zesty, light but textural and reveals a long, stimulatingly saline and savory finish with some salt grains on the aftertaste. 9.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 20 25 in January 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

Yellow apple, white peach, lime zest and a strong slate-mineral streak. Off-dry and light-bodied, the touch of sweetness balanced by high, clean acidity. Long, salty, mineral finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
