" The village red 2022 Bellmunt Negre feels surprisingly fresh and agile, with notes of translucent red berries and some spiciness. It has a medium- to full bodied palate and abundant, fine-grained tannins. It's a blend of 70% Garnacha and 30% Cariñena matured for 10 months with equal parts in 3,300-liter concrete vats and 3,000-liter oak vats."

More about Mas d'en Gil Bellmunt

Mas d'en Gil is one of Priorat's historic estates, a sprawling property in Bellmunt del Priorat with a history stretching back to the nineteenth century, long before the region's modern revival, and that the Rovira family has spent the last quarter-century bringing back to life.

The estate takes its name from Francesc Gil, a businessman from Reus who bought it in 1860. From 1931 it belonged to the Barril family, who sold their wine as Masia Barril. In 1998 the Rovira Carbonell family bought it, restored the original name, recovered the old vines and olive groves and rebuilt the winery. Marta Rovira, the youngest daughter, now runs it. Of roughly 125 hectares, about 35 are vineyards, with forest and olive groves around them. Soils run from the region's dark slate to clay and sand in the valley bottoms, and most vines face east or northeast, sheltering the Garnacha from the afternoon sun.

Under Marta the farming moved to biodynamic methods, and the estate is certified organic. Harvests now come earlier, in pursuit of fresher wines. The white Coma Blanca and the red Clos Fontà hold Priorat's single-vineyard Vi de Finca status. The Bellmunt wines are the village bottlings: Garnacha-led, raised in concrete, and a lively, fruit-first way into Priorat.
