For a lot of people, this is where Lebanese wine starts. Le Colombier is Massaya's entry-level red, and it has been plenty of drinkers' first bottle from the country (a good first one, too). Behind it are brothers Sami and Ramzi Ghosn, who work with two serious French partners: the Brunier family of Vieux Télégraphe in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Hébrards of Saint-Émilion. The 2022 is 35% Grenache Noir, 35% Cinsault and 30% Tempranillo. Massaya grows its grapes in the foothills of the Mount Lebanon range, 1,200 to 1,600 meters up, on chalky clay. Everything is picked by hand into crates and sorted on tables, then destemmed, fermented in stainless steel for 20 to 30 days and aged for a year in vat. It's dry, light-bodied and sustainably farmed, and it makes the case for an unfamiliar region without asking you to do any homework.

More about Massaya

Lebanese wine from the Beqaa Valley—made possible because two brothers and a pair of French wine families decided that rebuilding a country's wine tradition was worth the gamble. Sami and Ramzi Ghosn partnered with Châteauneuf-du-Pape's Bruniers and Saint-Émilion's Hebrards to craft Grenache-based reds that prove Lebanon's terroir is as serious as the region's history is complicated.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A mezze spread with hummus, baba ghanoush, muhammara and grilled halloumi; chicken shish taouk with garlic toum; lamb kofta with yogurt sauce; or za'atar manakish. It's light enough to take a slight chill.

Tasting Profile

A dry, light-bodied red made from Grenache, Cinsault and Tempranillo. It's fermented in stainless steel and aged in vat, so expect the grapes to lead rather than oak. It's an easygoing, food-friendly weight, not a big or heavy Lebanese red.
