One of Italy's most powerful and age-worthy red wines from Campania's Aglianico heartland. Mastroberardino's flagship Radici translates as 'roots'—and for good reason. First produced in 1928, renamed Radici in 1986, this wine defines Taurasi DOCG's depth and complexity. The 2019 vintage, aged 24 months in French oak and Slavonian casks, then 24 months in bottle, presents a silken yet concentrated expression: aromas of cloves, incense, chocolate, and dark cherry fill the glass; the palate bathes in tart acidity and crunchy fruit intensity. This is a benchmark southern Italian red with 50 years of potential aging. Decant one hour before serving. Cellar this wine or drink it now with substantial food.

"The 2019 Taurasi Radici is impossible to ignore, mixing cloves with incense, crushed stones and dried black cherries. This is saturating and intense, with a silken textural wave that ushers in masses of tart wild berry fruits and spices, all carried by a stream of vibrant acidity. It finishes long and youthfully tense, with a mineral tinge that lingers along with notes of black licorice and a sour cranberry crunch. In 2019, the Taurasi Radici is back to form." —Eric Guido

"In the bottle with the black label, the Mastroberardino 2019 Taurasi Radici is a brambly and intense wine with dark fruit, resin and petroleum jelly. Those tertiary tones have taken hold for sure, but the mouthfeel is graciously not too heavy or thick. Texturally, it remains light on its feet, with hints of cumin, spice and dried berry fruit. This is an ample release of 75,000 bottles that to me has more depth and verticality compared to the two Naturalis Historia wines from 2018." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

"This well-integrated red wine, which combines rich cherry coulis and sweet tobacco flavours, is very well balanced. It offers mineral, mocha and aniseed notes as well as a core of dense, fine-grained tannins. The lively, lingering finish is lush and well flavoured."

More about Mastroberardino

Founded in 1878, Mastroberardino is Taurasi's historic reference point. Brothers Antonio and Walter refused to abandon Aglianico after WWII when everyone else was planting bulk varieties. Their Radici bottling essentially started the red-wine revolution of southern Italy. This is heritage that means something.
