The 2017 October fires nearly derailed Napa’s vintage, but Matthiasson’s decades-long philosophy of early picking proved essential—fruit came in before the crisis, preserving the lifted florality and firm tannin structure that define great Cabernet Franc. This vineyard program, born from careful clonal selection grafted onto old Merlot vines, channels Phoenix Vineyard’s old-vine complexity into a wine that tastes both immediately approachable and thoughtfully layered. Nine years into evolution, the wine has shed its youthful intensity in favor of integrated structure: the tannins have resolved into silk, the acidity maintains its defining freshness, and the florality has deepened into complexity. Matthiasson’s restrained hand—minimal extraction, gentle aging—ensures this Franc remains elegant rather than austere. This is a wine that grows more interesting as you drink it, each sip revealing new dimensions.
