Limerick Lane Vineyard—planted in 1910 by the Del Fava family near Healdsburg—harbors some of California’s oldest surviving Zinfandel vines, supplemented by a field blend of Peloursin, Negrette, and Petite Sirah that speaks to turn-of-century Russian River planting philosophy. October’s devastating fires nearly claimed this historic vineyard, but Matthiasson’s early-harvest discipline meant fruit came in before the crisis—preserving the varietal’s defining intensity and acidity. At nine years old, this wine shows the characteristic brambly power of mature Limerick Lane Zin: dark berry, spice, and the kind of structural intensity that demands food and promises evolution. The field blend’s complexity—the other varietals’ herbal notes and tannic structure—deepens the wine’s personality beyond straight Zinfandel bombast. This is a wine rooted in history (116 years of vines), place (Russian River’s warm, complex terroir), and vintage drama (surviving 2017’s fires through careful timing).
